How To Make A Balloon Arch With Tape And A Cricut
You need to decide whether you’re going to buy a kit. Or alternatively go solo and make the arch totally free hand. When researching this post I found that kits offer great value as they contain all the components you need.
Thus you simply, build, cut your vinyl and decorate. Also, they are not too difficult to build and the more you do, the easier it gets.
To Make A Balloon Arch You Will Need:
A balloon arch kit. This one was from Amazon and added a few extra confetti balloons.
If you want to build the arch yourself you will need
- Balloon arch strip tape and glue dots.
- Fish wire or cotton to attach to doors, walls etc.
- Balloons of varied sizes. ( I used 100, in 5 varied sizes)
You Will Also Need
- Balloon pump ( I used an air bed pump)
- Cricut Joy
- Cricut removable smart vinyl
- Weeding tool
- Transfer tape (optional)
Step By Step How To Make A Baby Shower Balloon Arch
Preparing The Balloon Arch
Start by preparing your vinyl decals, I prefect to use removable vinyl as I find it easier to reposition once the arch is built.
If you’re using a Cricut Joy and have larger images that would want to break down check out this tutorial. I broke down the feet so I could cut two larger feet on the Joy. Alternatively you would not need to do this on the Cricut Maker or Air.

Blow up all of your balloons with a balloon pump. As you are blowing them up start building a plan of how you are going to distribute them throughout the arch. Also, I found some of the balloons difficult to inflate, however stretching them before hand resolved this.
Ensure you keep some of the balloons quite small, these will be used for filling in any gaps when the arch is in position.
Once the balloons are blown up and the vinyl decals are cut and weeded, decide on which you want to decorate. Consider where in the arch you will place the balloons as this will affect the direction.
Freehand place the vinyl decals onto the balloons. I chose the decorate the largest balloons and also some of the clear confetti balloons.
Don’t rub too hard to adhere at this stage as you may need to remove them when the arch is build and in place. Thus don’t stress if you have any creases these can be corrected later.
How To Make A Balloon Arch With Tape
When learning how to make a balloon arch for the first time consider the balance and start with the biggest balloons first. Distributing them throughout the tape at intervals considering where you are going to hang the arch and where they will fit when finished.
Using the balloon arch strip distribute your biggest balloons evenly. I went for top middle and bottom of the arch, using the middle sized balloons on the arch strip and to build up the arch.
To attach the balloons to the arch strip you simply pull the tied balloon end through the ballon arch strip and slide across, which makes the arch quite secure.
However if you do intend to move the arch or keep it outside also secure the balloon to the strip with a glue dot. ( I transported mine in the car and did not secure with glue dots and only had to re attach 3 balloons, these strips are secure. But the glue dots are great for peace of mind.)
Keep going with all the balloons apart from the small balloons, leave the smallest balloons until your arch is in place. These will be attached with the glue dots.
Attaching The Balloon Arch
When your arch is full, decide where you are going to hang it and attach cotton or fish wire to the arch and pull into position.
This is the time to ensure the Cricut vinyl balloon decals are all in the correct position and you’re happy? If you are, use a dry cloth to gently smooth them down. Alternatively you can gently reposition and then smooth down.
Now fill in any gaps and build up the shape by adding glue dots onto the smaller balloons. This step really does finish off the balloon arch.
