Step-by-Step Tutorial To Make This Layered Caravan
You Will Need
- Cricut machine (Joy, Explore, or Maker)
- Cricut Design Space (free software)
- Standard Gripmat (green)
- Cardstock in your chosen colours
- Weeding tool (for removing small bits)
- Brayer (optional, to smooth cardstock on mat)
- Cosmic Shimmer glue
- Nuvo Drops For Detail
- Pintasa Acrylic Paint Pens
1. Upload and Resize Your File
Start by uploading the caravan alphabet letter to Cricut Design Space. You may need to resize it if it stretches on upload. Don’t worry, I’ve got a video here to help.
2. Create Your Flower Embellishments
To make simple flowers:
- Use oval shapes from the free shape library in Design Space
- Unlock and reshape them to suit
- Arrange five petals in a circle and weld them together
- Position them around your caravan
- Once happy, weld them again and slice the flower layer from your caravan shape. This creates cute cut-out detailing.
3. Add Polka Dots to the Bunting
- Use small circles to create polka dots
- Position them on your bunting
- Weld the dots together into one shape
- Slice them out of the bunting section of your letter
This is optional, but it adds lovely detail!

4. Create Multiple Layers with the Contour Tool
Now for the magic of contouring:
- Start with the top layer (the most detailed one)
- On each subsequent layer, use Contour to hide certain elements: e.g., curtains, windows, flower cut-outs. When you have finished duplicating the contoured layer.
- Colour each layer a different shade so you can see them building up
- Layer 2 will have slightly fewer details, layer 3 fewer again, etc.
? Tip: Never go back to the first/top layer. Always duplicate the most recent contoured one and remove more elements from there.

5. Add Extra Detail, Grass
Grass Layer:
- Create bumpy shapes using semicircles or wavy edges
- Position along the bottom of your letter
- Slice and weld as needed to get a perfect grassy edge
- Colour it green and place it behind your caravan

6. Cut and Build Your Layers
Now you’re ready to cut!
- Use a brayer to firmly press cardstock to your mat for best results
- Cut each layer in order
- Stack and glue layer by layer, aligning carefully
If you make a mistake (I doubled up one layer!), don’t panic, just re-cut or tweak your layers. Crafting is all about experimenting and learning!
