Can You Freeze Home Made Burgers?
The burgers can be frozen on the day of making as long as the mince meat has not been previously frozen, keeping in the freezer for up to 4 weeks, thawing thoroughly before using.
It’s best to use ground beef that has a higher fat content, such as ground chuck or ground sirloin, as it will give your burgers more flavor and juiciness. However you can use low fat lean beef and add an egg yolk.
Take a handful of the seasoned ground beef and form it into a ball. Next, gently flatten the ball into a patty that is about 3/4 inch thick. Although make sure not to overwork the meat, as this can make the burgers tough.
Not if you are using beef with a high fat content, you don’t need to add anything to the beef to help it stick together. The fat content in the ground beef will help the patties hold their shape. However if using lower fat beef then use an egg yolk.
Either method works well, but grilling will give the burgers a nice smoky flavor. If cooking on the stovetop, use a nonstick skillet, good quality frying pan or a cast iron skillet.
It depends on the thickness of the patties and how well-done you like your burgers. A general rule of thumb is to cook them for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, 4-5 minutes per side for medium, or lastly 5-6 minutes per side for well-done.
The internal temperature of the burgers should reach 160°F (71°C) for them to be fully cooked. You can use a meat thermometer to check the temperature, or alternativly make a small cut in the center of the burger to check for any pinkness.
Cheddar, American, Swiss, and also blue cheese are all popular choices for burgers. It’s best to use a cheese that melts easily so it can be added to the burger during the last minute or so of cooking.
Brioche buns or potato buns are both great choices for burgers. Toast the buns on the grill or in a toaster for added flavor.
Some classic toppings include lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and ketchup. Other options also include bacon, avocado, sautéed mushrooms, or a fried egg. Be creative and have fun with it!
