Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make a Cat And Mouse Card Using Cricut
You will need….
- Cricut machine (Joy, Explore, or Maker)
- Cricut Design Space (free software)
- Standard Gripmat (green)
- Weeding tool (for removing small bits)
- Brayer (optional, to smooth cardstock on mat)
- Foam pads or glue
- Pintasa Acrylic Paint Pens
- Card Stock

Prep: open Cricut Design Space
- Launch Cricut Design Space.
- Upload your chosen SVG from the free alphabet/number set.
1. Size & Position The Letter
- Drag the uploaded letter onto the canvas.
- Resize it to the size you want for your card. (They come very large, zoom out and shrink them. The SVG quality is high, so scaling down is fine.)
- Duplicate the letter once.
2. Create The Pink Detail Layer (Eyes, Nose, Wool, Mouse Bits)
- Select the duplicated letter that will become the detail layer.
- Use the Contour tool (bottom right) to remove the parts you don’t want, remove controls for the balls of wool, the cat’s nose, mouse eyes, etc.
- Once contoured, change this layer’s colour to pink so you can see it clearly.
- Duplicate this contoured pink layer again; you’ll need one copy to send to the back as the backing layer.
Tip: Always duplicate the layer you contoured to create a new contour layer.
3. Create The Top And Middle Layers
- Choose the top layer (the main cat shape) and pick your top colour. I used brown for the cat; choose what suits you.
- For the back layer (the one that will form the card base cut), use the duplicate of the pink layer or a plain backing layer and set it to white (or your card base colour).
4. Make The Card Base From The Back Layer
- On the back / card layer, change the canvas background colour temporarily, Iused pale grey, so you can see the edges of a light layer.
- Duplicate your letter and move one copy so you can make the card fold, flip one duplicate vertically (so it’s upside down) and hover it over the other to form the top and bottom halves of the card.
- From the shapes bar, add a square. Unlock it if needed and stretch it into a thin rectangle that sits between the two letter halves, forming the card spine/bridge.
- Adjust so there’s a small gap of a couple of millimetres where the layers meet, this gap prevents the card from bending or catching when layered.
- Align everything centrally, then weld the shapes together, this becomes your cut card base.
5. Check Final Sizes For Mat/Cutting Limits
- Ensure the welded card and layers fit under the cut limits you want (under 12.6 inches for a 12×12 mat; as I worked with A4 for glitter cardstock).
- Position pieces on the canvas to match your mat size (I used A4 because it’s cheaper for glitter cardstock).
6. Prepare To Cut
- Place the chosen cardstock on the correct mat
- In Design Space, choose the right material setting:
- For glitter cardstock: select glitter cardstock and more pressure.
- For standard cardstock: standard cardstock setting with more pressure.
- Send each layer to cut (top cat layer, pink detail layer, backing layer, plus any plain mats).
7. Cut & Remove Pieces
- Cut each layer.
- Remove pieces from the mat, reverse weeding is easier.
- If you used glitter cardstock for the base, flip or rotate as you prefer when placing on mat.
8. Assembly
- Start by bending the white glitter layer in half to create the the card layer.
- Next, layer the top two layers with Acrylic Glue
- Attach the top layers to the card layer with sticky pads
- Finish any tiny painted details with acrylic paint pens (e.g., adding the cat’s collar or detail to the cat’s whisker dots or shading).
