There is no better way to spend the evening than being wrapped in the spellbinding music of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, and last night, I was able to enjoy such pleasure at the Opera House in Manchester with the Mergaliyev Classical Ballet’s presentation of Swan Lake.

What Is Swan Lake About
Swan Lake opens with Prince Siegfried celebrating his birthday, where his mother presents him with a crossbow and reminds him of his royal duty: to choose a wife. A grand ball is planned for the following evening, featuring a group of elegant, carefully chosen young women as prospective brides. Siegfried must select his future queen.
As night falls, Siegfried ventures to the lake with his bow, only to encounter a mesmerising white swan that transforms into a stunning young woman. She is Odette, Queen of the Swans, who reveals her tragic fate. Ensnared by the wicked sorcerer Rothbart’s spell, Odette and her companions are cursed to live as swans by day, regaining their human form only between midnight and dawn.
The spell can only be broken by the pure love of a young man. Captivated by Odette’s beauty, Prince Siegfried instantly falls in love and vows to free her from the curse. Confident in the power of his love, he believes he can break the spell. However, as dawn approaches, Odette must return to the lake and resume her swan form. The lovers part with hope, but Rothbart schemes to force the Prince into breaking his vow.

The enchanting score, composed by Tchaikovsky in 1871, coupled with the ballet’s debut in 1877, weaves an unforgettable tale of heartbreak and despair. Presented in the most exquisite way.
It’s astounding to think that audiences were captivated by this same masterpiece 148 years ago. The timeless beauty of its music and dance continues to resonate. Allowing us to experience the same magic today as audiences did over a century ago.
My Review of Mergaliyev Ballet’s Swan Lake
Swan Lake embodies grace, elegance, and perfection. Drawing you in and making you feel as though you are the only person in the theatre. The music exudes a mesmerising, calming effect that envelops your soul, allowing you to forget the world beyond the stage.
It’s hard to imagine anything could captivate your attention so completely. Yet, as I left the theatre, despite the story’s melancholic undertones, I felt both calm and uplifted, having witnessed beauty in its purest form on every level.
Swan Lake is undoubtedly my favourite ballet. It has a magic I can’t quite describe; it’s more of a feeling in my soul. And the Mergaliyev Ballet delivered a stunning performance and the required amount of magic on every level.
