Review Single White Female At The Opera House Manchester

I love theatre, and the all-singing, all-dancing joy it brings, and the bigger, the better. But sometimes it’s great to see a play, something altogether darker but equally gripping and Single White Female really did hit the spot.

Single White Female at Manchester’s Opera House delivers a gripping stage adaptation of the classic 1990s psychological thriller. This world?premiere production blends suspense, dark humour, and modern-day anxieties about identity and connection.

What Is Single White Female About?

Featuring standout performances from Kym Marshand (Hedy) and  Lisa Faulkner (Ali), and penned by broadcaster and author Rebecca Reid, the story follows recently divorced mum Allie as her seemingly perfect lodger, Hedy, gradually crosses the line from friend to obsession. But her motives are not at all what they seem.

The movie was pretty shocking when it came out, back before the days of social media, I know there were such times! When mobile phones the size of bricks were the big thing, Single White Female sent shock waves. Of course, times have changed, life is very different, and we are less naive; however, what hasn’t changed is that some people are still nothing short of terrifying, and in some cases, crazy.

My Review of Single White Female

There are many storyline differences between today’s production and the movie, but there sort of had to be. However, that worked, blending a cult movie with the reality of life today resulted in a hopefully not too realistic portrayal of living with the enemy.

I feel Rebecca Reid has given the audience room to feel slightly sympathetic towards Hedy. Offering a back story that answers the question of her madness. But also gives it a darker edge as you realise the length she has gone to.

Allie was the perfect trusting host who allowed a mad woman into her home and family, and Hedy fooled her perfectly, infiltrating the family and gaining trust with the daughter, Bella (The very talented Amy Snudden) and manipulating ex-husband Sam (Jonny McGarrity). However, best friend Graham (Andro) was not fooled, and Hedy knew this!

Single White Female, although different, was brilliant, dark, and gripping. There were moments when the silence in the theatre was almost deafening, as the tension on stage kept everyone on the edge of their seats. If you like supsence this is a great play to watch.
