A Few Facts About The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. It symbolises the friendship between the two nations and their shared values of liberty and democracy.
She was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, while the iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel, who later designed the Eiffel Tower.
Her full name of the statue is “Liberty Enlightening the World.”
The statue stands at a total height of 305 feet (93 meters) from the ground to the tip of the torch, including the pedestal. The statue itself is 151 feet (46 meters) tall.
Lady Liberty holds a torch in her right hand, symbolising enlightenment, and a tablet in her left hand inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) in Roman numerals.
The statue’s exterior is made of copper, which has oxidised over time to form the green patina that it is known for today. Initially, the statue was a shiny copper colour.
The Statue of Liberty was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, recognising its global significance as a symbol of freedom and democracy.
