Reasons To Choose A Norwegian Fjords Cruise
Breathtaking Scenery
Norway’s iconic fjords and towns, such as Geirangerfjord, Stavanger and Olden, provide stunning views. Sailing through the Seven Sisters Waterfall through the dramatic cliffs and serene waters is breathtaking.
The coastal beauty, dotted with charming pastel coloured villages and rugged landscapes, makes every moment unique.

Plan Your Trip
Check out these handy links to help you booking your next trip.
However, it is also easy to get off the ship and self-explore in Norway; we self-explored many ports and were able to make a considerable saving doing this whilst still getting to see everything we wanted to.
Hellesylt
Hellesylt is a picturesque village in Norway, known for its stunning waterfalls, including the Hellesylt Waterfall, which dramatically splits the town, cascading through its center before flowing into the fjord. It serves as a gateway to the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord.

Stavanger
Take advantage of the historic part of town with its cobbled streets and white-washed wooden houses. But leave time to visit the shopping area, then head down to Øvre Holmegate and check out the stunning street art.
Also check out the harbour with its pretty cafes and bars it really is quite unique as ships sail right into the city.

Olden
To see the Glaciers from Olden, visit the Olden Glacier Tour ticket booth and book the bus for around £25. This will take you out to the foot of the glaciers for spectacular views of the Glacier over the lake.

The Seven Sisters Waterfall
If you are heading to Geirangerfjord and want to see the Seven Sisters Waterfall. Named so because, according to local legend, the waterfall represents seven sisters known for their beauty and charm, who lived by Geirangerfjord. They often played by the fjord, attracting the attention of a handsome suitor who lived across the water.
The suitor, desperate to win their affection, frequently sailed over to catch their eye but was playfully teased by the sisters. In his frustration, he turned to magic, yet the sisters chose to remain free and rejected him.
Heartbroken, the suitor transformed into the adjacent waterfall known as “The Suitor” (or “Friaren”), symbolising his eternal longing for the sisters. This folklore enriches the charm of the Seven Sisters Waterfall, highlighting themes of love, longing, and the connection between nature and local culture.
Cruise ships offer boat trips out to see the waterfalls. However, before booking, check if the ship sails through the waterfalls when it leaves port. This is the best way to see them. We got a spot at the front of the ship, wrapped up warm and drank champagne as we sailed though and marvelled at the beauty of the fjords.

Comfort and Relaxation
Onboard amenities, from comfortable cabins to gourmet dining, ensure a comfortable experience rather than long journeys between towns and cities. Enjoy luxury while taking in the scenic views, and relax on deck with a drink or a good book, or, as we did, in a hot tub in the retreat as you sail. I love that you can visit multiple destinations and have somewhere to retreat. It’s all about the destination; you don’t even have to think about getting there.
Culinary Delights
Norwegian cuisine is renowned for its fresh seafood, and cruises offer ample opportunities to enjoy local delicacies with themed nights. They also provide options for fussy eaters unwilling to try something new. Cruises have many dining options included, but also options to try speciality and themed dining at an extra cost. No matter what you decide there are always delicious food and snacks available. You can spend as much or as little as you want.

Wildlife Encounters
Norway is rich in wildlife, with opportunities to spot seals, whales, and seabirds. Many cruises offer wildlife-watching excursions, providing insights into the local ecosystem. The diverse landscapes and wildlife also create fantastic photography opportunities.
But also keep your eyes open for pods of dolphins swimming alongside the ship. Top Tip: When our boys were little, we used to ask for a dining spot next to the window. This is the perfect time of day to spot dolphins.
Cultural Experiences on Your Norwegian Fjords Cruise
Discover Norway’s rich history through visits to historical sites, museums, and charming towns. Depending on your cruise dates, you might experience local festivals, showcasing traditional music, dance, and food, deepening your understanding of Norwegian culture.
Search for museums in the port before you visit. This way, you leave the ship to explore with a plan, whether it is street art, a Viking museum, or a local market. Having the postcode and opening times handy helps you plan. We also search TikTok for local spots to visit, colourful streets and the best bars and restaurants.

Is It Cold On A Norwegian Fjords Cruise in June?
Before diving into specific clothing recommendations, let’s discuss the weather you can expect in Norway during June. This month marks the beginning of summer, and while you may experience milder temperatures compared to other months, it’s important to remember that Norway’s weather can be quite variable.
In June, temperatures in Norway typically range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). However, coastal areas can feel cooler due to wind chill, especially in the mornings and evenings. As you cruise through the fjords, you may also encounter microclimates, where temperatures can fluctuate dramatically based on location.
June is one of the wetter months in Norway, so expect occasional rain showers and lots of drizzle. It’s crucial to pack items that can keep you dry and warm. Wind can also be a factor, particularly on deck, so wearing wind-resistant clothing will enhance your comfort while sailing.
I packed for all the weather and took lots of layers, but I was hopeful for warmer weather. However, on the whole, I found Norway cooler and wetter than anywhere I have visited before in June. Fortunately, we had booked the retreat a private sundeck, so we had use of a hot tub and sunbeds protected from the elements.

What To Wear On A Summer Cruise To Norway
When preparing for your Norwegian fjords cruise, it’s vital to have a well-thought-out packing list that covers a variety of conditions. Here are some essential items to consider:
1. Don’t Leave Your Waterproof Jacket At Home
A waterproof jacket is arguably the most essential item for your cruise. Choose one that is lightweight and breathable, allowing for comfort whether you’re exploring the fjords or relaxing on deck. Look for features like adjustable hoods and cuffs to tighten and keep the elements at bay. But also something comfortable to tie around your waste as the weather can change in a heartbeat, and it often did.
2. Take All The Layered Clothing
Layering is key when cruising in June. Start with a base layer, such as a short-sleeve or long-sleeved t-shirt. On top of that, wear a warmer layer like a fleece or a light hoodie for those cooler mornings and evenings. Here’s a breakdown of what to include:
- Base Layers: Moisture-wicking t-shirts in both short-sleeve and long-sleeved options are great for staying dry.
- Mid-Layers: A fleece jacket, hoodie or lightweight pullover provides warmth without being bulky.
- Outer Layer: Your waterproof jacket should be your top layer, easily removable when the sun shines.

3. Comfortable Walking Shoes For Your Norwegian Fjords Cruise
When it comes to footwear, comfort is paramount. If my feet hurt, I feel miserable. You’ll likely take part in excursions that involve a lot of walking. Choose shoes that are supportive and suitable for various terrains. Here are a few options to consider:
- Hiking Shoes: If you plan on hiking or walking in more rugged areas during your Norwegian Fjords Cruise, a pair of hiking shoes with a good grip, along with good quality walking socks, is ideal to avoid blisters.
- Waterproof Sandals: For warmer days, waterproof sandals can be comfortable for both onboard and shore activities.
- Casual Trainers: A good pair of trainers for casual outings in towns and during excursions, and perfect for walks around the deck and the ship on sea days.
4. Trousers and Leggings
Choose comfortable bottoms that allow for easy movement. Here are some recommendations:
- Hiking Trousers: Lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying trousers are excellent for hikes and excursions on your Norwegian Fjords Cruise.
- Leggings: Leggings are a great choice for comfort during onboard activities or casual outings. They can also be worn under dresses for added warmth.
- Jeans: I am a jean kinda girl and opt for jeans on sunnier days that I can roll to 3/4 length on sunnier days.
5. Accessories: Hats, Scarves, and Gloves
Although June is a summer month, temperatures can drop, especially in the evenings. Pack the following accessories to keep warm:
- Scarf: A lightweight scarf can add warmth without taking up much space in your luggage.
- Hat: A wide-brimmed hat will protect you from the sun during daytime excursions, while a bobble hat can keep you warm during night excursions and colder days.
- Gloves: Lightweight gloves can be a lifesaver for chilly days or windy days on deck.
- Water Bottle: This is handy to take into port, Norway is expensive, so keep hydrated and save the pennies for coffee and cake.
6. Swimwear
While you may not spend all day at the beach when cruising the Norwegian Fjords, many cruise ships have pools or hot tubs. Packing swimwear allows you to take advantage of these amenities should the opportunity arise. We did take several opportunities to chill in the hot tub as we sailed out of port. It’s a great way to relax with a glass of wine and catch up with work after a day in port.

7. Toiletries and Sunscreen
Even though it may not feel particularly hot, the sun can be strong, especially when reflected off the water. Be sure to include:
- Sunscreen: A high SPF is essential, even on cloudy days to avoid windburn.
- Lip Balm: Choose one with SPF to protect your lips from the sun and wind.
- Moisturiser: The sea air can be drying, so keep your skin hydrated.
- Also, don’t forget make-up, jewelry, hair products, shower gel, and deodorant.
8. Shore Excursions on Your Norwegian Fjords Cruise
When your cruise ship docks in the Norwegian Fjords, you’ll likely have opportunities for excursions. Here are some popular activities you might consider:
- Hiking: The fjords offer stunning trails suitable for all skill levels from hills to glaciers. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking excursions.
- Kayaking: Paddle through the calm waters of the fjords; this is a popular tour in Hellesylt in the port area. A swimsuit and quick-dry clothing are ideal. However, tours will often arrange wetsuits to go over.
- Cultural Tours: Explore charming villages and historical sites. Comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing are best for these outings.
Dress Code on Board
Most cruise lines have a relaxed dress code, but it’s always good to check the specific guidelines of your chosen cruise line. Here are some general tips on what to wear onboard:
Casual Daywear
During the day, comfortable and casual attire is usually the norm. This can include:
- T-shirts or Polo Shirts: Easy to wear and breathable; cruise ships have air conditioning but are usually kept at an average temperature; I don’t often get cold inside. But it’s handy to have a jacket for heading out on to deck.
- Lightweight Trousers or Shorts: Depending on your comfort level and the weather, both options are suitable.
- Comfortable Footwear: For sunnier days, choose shoes that are easy to slip on and off if you head to the pool. Also, wear trainers or pumps for walking around the ship.

Evening Wear
Cruise ships have changed, and dressing up is more of a personal choice. However, I do enjoy dressing up for dinner in the evenings. While casual wear is acceptable, some evenings may call for a slightly more formal look, especially for dinners. Consider the following options:
- Smart Casual: A dress or trousers, blouse, and sandals are all options, and I like to have a choice. However, I often opt for a casual dress for less formal nights.
- Formal Nights: If your cruise line has formal nights, consider packing a dress or a suit. Check with your cruise line for specific requirements. Also, don’t forget shoes and an evening bag.

If you are flying check for luggage restrictions, make sure your suitcase is not too heavy. Be sure to check these guidelines to avoid any surprises and extra costs at check-in.
