When we moved into our quirky little home we had no idea the work that actually needed doing.
And the garden was probably the biggest project, it seems to have taken forever to get it looking how we envisioned, and cost a small fortune. It’s the silly things that cost money. Fencing, concrete, grass seeds, weed killer and the list goes on. And all I wanted to do was buy garden furniture and create a family chill space.
This year we are finally at the furnishing stage, we have just finished fitting the lights and took delivery of our brand new garden furniture from Homebase a couple of weeks ago. I have been longing for a sofa forever but there had always been other priorities. Stuff you can’t see but need to do.
I was so giddy when it arrived, Joe and I set too arranging and organising the garden and it looked great. It also started to rain, and it rained for 4 weeks. Can you believe this summer? So I packed up the cushions and looked longingly out of the window and my sofa looking lonely on the decking in the rain, waiting to be used.
But the beauty of new garden furniture it that it is not going anywhere, it is waiting for those glory days of long hot summers, the whole family chilling and arguing over the corner seat.
It may have taken a while but at last, last week the sun came out.
The best thing was, the garden was empty. Joe had his BFF Fin here for the day so they were inside Xboxing. Jack was having a much-needed teen afternoon rest and Chris was at work. Now usually I am one for getting the kids in the garden to enjoy the fresh air. Usually that is where Joe is found.
But lucky for me the coast was clear and the sun was shining. I poured my self a sneaky late afternoon glass of wine, set up my cushions and grabbed a book. It was heaven, the birds were singing and Toby was laid nearby snoring in the afternoon sun, but other than that peace and quiet.
I had visions of this being a family area, somewhere we can all hang out in the summer. I had recently created myself a little chill area and this was my family vision. But just for today I was going to keep it all to myself and enjoy the peace.
Of course best laid plans and all that!
As soon as I got comfy I got ambushed. Joe and Fin had spotted me and decided to join me. Whilst I am always happy to see them, it took them ages to get comfy, and as they jumped from cushion to cushion deciding where to sit getting Toby giddy who was now trying to jump up and get in on the action.
Then Chris appeared, he is on full job mode at the moment so had a list of evening jobs for us to do. As he ran through the schedule I rolled my eyes knowing there was no relaxing for me this evening. By now Jack and his football appeared, honestly that ball is constantly attached to his bloomin foot. So he took pictures of us all as he intermittently kicked the ball around.
By this stage knew there was no relaxing for me, my vision of a chilled evening was slipping away. My jobs were waiting, and dinner had to be made. Thats what family life is like right? Enjoying being ambushed, making the most of time together.
But that sofa is not going anywhere; I know we will have many happy days chilling as a family. I will also get my me time, just me, the birds, the sofa and a magazine. But for now, it looks great and it ready and waiting for all those times, long hot summer days in the garden.

Garden furniture has come such a long way. Remember when it was all uncomfy benches? Your couch looks so cosey. I don’t think my boys would ever want to get off it!

LOVE it Sarah!!! What a fantastic seating area — I love the idea of an outdoor sofa!! We had new chairs last year but our table has had it — that’s on the ‘must-have’ list for next summer — I don’t think it will survive another winter!! 🙂
Our just gave up after 15 years Caro and I loved that table but it was time for new furniture and a new look, I am so thrilled with it x

Love your sofa. We got ours this year and I was also yearning to get outside and use it. I have even been found out there at 9 pm at night wrapped up in a throw. Hope you get many a sunny day to use it. #HomeEtc
Ha ha I nearly did that tonight, but am looking forward to sitting under the stars with a glass of wine x
I love your garden Sarah and isn’t it amazing how much a piece of furniture can transform your outdoor space. We bought a comfy sofa set at the end of May and then it rained and rained , and I gazed longingly at it from the patio window. But hurrah for the sunshine, and we use the garden as much as we can. Perfect for just chatting away at the end of the day x
Yes I agree I look forward to sitting in the garden catching up at the end of the day, and same here but we have a heatwave on the way so lots for sitting out for us Tracey x
Your garden looks lovely – and it looks as though you’re having a lot of fun!!!!! Great post Sarah and love how a garden can become an extension of your space. Thanks for sharing – great job 🙂
Thanks Jess, I am so looking forward to a bit of sunshine so we can get out and enjoy it x
Ah it looks great but hope you do get some me time there at times! And some sun, we could do with more couldn’t we – just so you can test it out, of course! #homeetc
Ha ha yes I need sun to test it out most definitely but at least I am off all summer this year unlike last so should get the time too enjoy it x
I have a similar set and we really use it a lot, it is lovely to have a nice space to sit on in the garden. I think it really makes the space much inviting
Elena I agree, I love having somewhere lovely and chilled to sit, and I cant wait for the sunshine so I can make the most of it x
It looks so good. Garden furniture is next on my list to do at our house. I long for a space to hang out with the family, that’s comfortable and practical. Might even need to put some decking in as well. You’ve done a great job.
Thanks Helen we all love chilling to in the garden. I just wish the weather was better grr !
