One of the things I really love about our little country home is having a balcony overlooking the garden. It’s so cute and has the best view. All I can see is green, the odd chicken shed and of course its occupants and sheep. It is somewhere that I could sit for hours just taking in the view and relaxing.
And with a bit of clever garden planning the football goals are right at the end of the garden so I can’t hear the chants of G.O.A.L as they boys run around with their t-shirts on their heads.

But being on the top of a hill with the elements means the balcony has got to be lovingly refreshed every couple of years with weatherproof paint.
And this year with the house getting a fresh coach of white we decided cool grey was the way forward. At first I wasn’t so sure, but now it is all done it looks striking against our little white house and white wooden blinds. And with the addition of my new balcony furniture from Rattan Direct it looks great.
There are rules to having a balcony. Such as kids and teens are only allowed on by invitation. Dogs may only enter the balcony with an adult. Just in case they see the squirrel they have been stalking for months, or a tasty looking chicken ventures into the garden. And no footballs can be thrown onto the balcony under any circumstance. IT IS NOT an oversized basketball net.
It is the perfect spot to chat over our day whilst the boys play football. We can see them but the risk of any contact with said football is minimal. And this glorious weather that keeps making an appearance really does have to be appreciated at every available opportunity.
Choosing a bistro set for the balcony was a bit of a big decision. Mainly because if I am given choice I can never choose! But also it had to be right for the space.
Lightweight enough to be able to move indoors on windy nights in winter, or compact enough to be able to store away over the winter months. But also contemporary looking so its blends in with the style of the house.
And it goes without saying, great quality so that it stands the test of time. It must also endure evening glasses of wine watching the sunset over Lancashire, and breakfast coffees whilst I listen to the birds and chickens starting out their days. Country life really is wonderful. And feeling like you are part of nature, having a front row seat on all that wildlife is wonderful.
And a balcony is not needed for a cozy reading, coffee and wine spot. It could be a little corner of the garden. Behind the shed with trellises full of pretty flowers, or in a corner of the patio, somewhere the sun drenches either morning or night.
What is important when we have such busy lives is finding somewhere lovely for that comfy seating area. With a table filled with refreshments and books. And decorated with pretty bunting or flowers. What a wonderful way to spend an hour or two?
