A Guide To Puy Du Fou For Families With Kids And Teens

Exactly what is Puy Du Fou?

It’s a theme park of epic proportions, set around 3 historically themed villages with real shops and restaurants. All the shops are independent traders making and selling unique products. The park does not focus on pushing branded products which is so refreshing. It sounds rather dull doesn’t it? However that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

The park first opened its doors in 1978 with the very first show of La Cinéscénie and has grown from strength to strength ever since. Welcoming over 2 million guests in 2017 it really is the best-kept secret France has to offer.

What Is A Theme Park Without Rides?

Puy Du Fou offers 7 spectacular day and night shows included in the price of your ticket. Yet you will also find 11 immersive shows that offer an interactive walk through experience. These are shows in themselves and offer spectacular effects and atmosphere.

Is It Possible For Kids And Teens Find All The Shows At Puy Du Fou boring?

Not a chance, every show is unique, exciting and equally different. Each offering a magical experiences with additional historical undertones that make you leave wanting to know more.

The people behind the shows at Puy De Fou are creative geniuses. Just when you think you have seen it all. You are presented with another show or special effect that has you firmly believing magic is real. That has you running to the next show wondering what on earth is going to happen next.

What Are The Best Shows At Puy Du Fou For Families?

This is such a subjective question, however my favourites were:

Le Mystère De La Pérouse

Takes you onboard the La Boussole, which set sail from Brest in 1785.  This immersive experience allows you to follow the ships expedition and all the crew encounters. Le Mysrére De La Pérouse’s attention to detail blew my mind.

The special effects were so incredible, I found myself holding onto the walls of the ship to stabilise myself several times, its crazy, exciting and wonderful with the most awesome finale. I came out wanting to do it all again.

This was my standout favourite shows and one to best suited older kids and teens. It really highlights the creativity of the team at Puy Du Fou, teens will love it!

Mousquetaire De Richelieu.

Based on the 3 musketeers this indoor show offers the most incredible stunts and effects. It’s showcased in an indoor theatre of epic portions that starts out quite tame. However in true Puy Du Fou style has you wondering how on earth they managed to create the incredible spectacular finale. This show is suitable for all ages.

Les Orgues De Feu.

A nighttime show, set to a spectacular fountain backdrop. Although Puy Du Fou offer more than just a fountain show, and I left feeling I had been to a ballet. This is a late night one, however it’s worth staying up for. Yet Les Orgues De Feu was the most spectacular fountain show I have ever seen. But expect a few crazy but wonderful surprises. Again one for families with kids and teens of all ages it is so very magical.

La Cinéscénie

La Cinéscénie is available at Puy Du Fou on Friday and Saturday nights. And has an addition fee to the park entry fee of €27 which you must book in advance. However if you are planning to visit, plan your trip around this it is a must see show. Lasting and hour and a half this is an off the scale show of proportions I have never before experienced. With a cast of epic proportions, 2500 play out the extravaganza in a huge arena, a short walk from the park entrance.

What Language Are The Shows At Puy Du Fou France?

All the shows are in French. However you can hire a translator set or connect to the on site app on a smart phone for translations. (Tip, take your own headphones as I found the ones that came with the device uncomfortable, smelled children will be better with comfy headsets.)

On occasions I never wore mine as I was able to follow the drama and magic of the show just the same. And it honestly did not detract one little bit. If anything made it all feel a bit more romantic. These shows are about the special effects and magic.

There is also a daily Puy Du Fou visitors guide together with an on site app available in English. (other languages are available) Thus providing you with up to date information on all shows and restaurant opening times, also including a helpful price guide.

Where To Eat At Puy Du Fou, France?

The food is exceptional and very reasonable priced in the park offering the option to take a picnic, use the fast food kiosks or eat in the unique dining experiences. You will find over 20 food outlets for all budgets, all themed and exciting in their own right. Even dining is exciting at Puy Du Fou.

Families with kids and teens are well catered for with children’s menus, although my teens prefer to eat off an adult menu. However younger children are also very well catered for. The buffet restaurants offer children’s lunch packs with a few options to choose from which makes dining with children so much less stressful.

How Do I Get To Puy Du Fou?

Puy Du Fou is 1 hour from Nantes by car. You can fly to Nantes with EasyJet from Luton, Gatwick and Liverpool and with a little research flights are very reasonably priced.

Where Can I Stay, Are There Hotels At Puy Du Fou?

STAY ONSITE ! Seriously it is awesome. There are 5 themed on site hotels, each with a different theme related to a different period in history. Check out my review of Le Camp dy Drap d’Or here.

However in short the accommodation really caters for families with separate bunk areas, all accommodation is themed making staying at Puy Du Fou an adventure in itself.

Whats New At Puy Du Fou

An exciting Grand-scale new attraction – ‘Le Premier Royaume’

2019 saw the opening of an extraordinary new production, ‘Le Premier Royaume’, which will be located in the heart of the Grand Park.  Inspired by a pivotal period in the history of France, this immersive attraction features magnificent sets and unprecedented special effects, uniquely conceived and produced by the Puy du Fou team.

Step into the 5th century and follow the destiny of Clovis, the famous king of the Franks, against a backdrop of Attila’s rampaging followers and a declining Roman Empire. Relive the military conquests undertaken by Clovis who increasingly found himself torn between the ancestral traditions of his people and his quest to found the first kingdom.

In ‘Le Premier Royaume’, Puy du Fou leads its visitors on a 20-minute walk-through experience, following Clovis through 14 different fantasy worlds. Visitors are able to pass through rooms surrounded by Attila’s Huns, through the bustling royal armoury and the Mérovingian palace until they reach the mythical legend-rich world of Valhalla where some of the uncertainties of this troubled period start to unravel.
