Review The Choir of Man, The Opera House, Manchester

Last night I was lucky enough to watch The Choir or Man at the Opera House in Manchester. Now I did know what to expect as this is the 3rd time I have seen this magnificent production. The first two times were at sea on Norwegian Encore, and I have to tell you, I wasn’t bothered seeing it the first time. I mean, men in a pub singing? On paper, it just didn’t appeal to me. But the Choir of Man had me hooked within 5 minutes.

What Is The Choir of Man About?

Created by Nic Doodson and Andrew Kay, with musical supervision by Jack Blume. The show first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, where it quickly became a standout hit thanks to its unique concept and infectious energy.

Following its success there, it toured internationally, securing a home in London’s West End and a residence at sea, where it continues to be a popular choice for audiences looking for something uplifting and a bit different.

Set inside a working pub on stage. Where a cast of nine multi-talented performers sing, dance, and play instruments. Plus, share heartfelt stories about friendship, community, and everyday life. The show blends well-known songs, from rock and pop to folk, with poetry and choreography. Thus creating an atmosphere that feels more like a night out with friends than a traditional musical.

There’s plenty of humour and thoughtful moments throughout, and the audience is very much part of the experience, with moments of interaction (and sometimes even a pint on stage).

My Review of The Choir of Man

The Choir of Man is one of the most upbeat shows I have seen; it’s almost not like being at a show. More of a night at the pub, the show is interactive, but in a fun way. It’s like they took the rule book of musical theatre and threw it out the window. But not in a negative or obnoxious way, but a way that pulls new people into the theatre to become the heart and soul of the show.

The cast (too many to name individually) is super talented and draws you in from the outset. But they are not just a cast, they are on the stage to welcome you with a pint as you enter the theatre, and up in the aisles at halftime.

There were four standing ovations last night! Before and after the spectacular finale, local choirs were invited to sing alongside the cast. If only you could have bottled the joy in the theatre, it was electric. This is feel-good theatre at its very best, and I can’t wait to see it again.
