7 Baby Staples for Every Changing Bag

Share

First-time parenting can feel daunting. Even planning a simple jaunt out can feel like you’re staging a military operation. For many parents, it’s assembling those changing bag essentials that prove the biggest challenge. Wondering what you need to take with you during a typical day out? We’ve put together a list of some of the most important staples you shouldn’t leave home without.

1. Feeding Essentials

Let’s get the obvious ones out of the way first. If you’re going to be away from your home for any length of time, your baby is going to need to feed at some point. This means stocking up on a sufficient supply of formula or expressed milk, along with other items like bottles and bibs. If you’re traveling with bottled breast milk, you’ll also need to ensure it’s kept cool. If your changing bag doesn’t come with insulated pockets, a separate cooler bag or freezer blocks will suffice.

2. Muslins

Whether you’re using them as a burp cloth or to mop up all those little spills, muslin squares are great to have on hand when you’re out and about. Big enough squares can also double as a blanket in a pinch, making them an indispensable addition to your changing bag inventory if the weather isn’t playing ball.

3. Nappy Rash Cream

Nappy rash is one of the most common health complaints faced by babies. While it’s relatively easy to treat at home, alleviating the symptoms can be more tricky when you’re on the go. Fortunately, there are plenty of over-the-counter treatments that can help combat this issue. Nappy rash creams are incredibly effective at reducing redness and alleviating itching. If nappy rash is particularly serious, it’s worth seeking out input from your GP who can prescribe a more powerful steroid cream.

4. Changing Mats

Even if you’re only away from the house for a brief period, there’s a good chance your child is going to need changing before you make it home. This makes carrying a changing mat with you at all times a must. Some mats can be a little cumbersome and take up considerable space in your changing bag. To optimise your storage, forget about standard mats and switch to a folding one instead.

5. Nappies and Wet Wipes

If your child hasn’t been potty trained yet, nappies are non-negotiable. Whether you’re using disposable nappies or reusable ones, it’s always a good idea to travel with a surplus. You’ll also want to stock up on wet wipes to make quick work of cleaning, while scented nappy bags will prove a welcome addition to your arsenal.

6. Spare Clothing

Whether it’s thanks to a messy mealtime or a little accident, soiled clothing is going to happen at some point. To ensure you’re prepared for every eventuality, kit out your changing bag with at least one set of spare clothing. You might even want to bring along extra base layers if you’ll be out on your travels for an entire day.

7. Summer Staples

Come the summertime, get ready for a whole new revision of your changing bag staples. While everyone enjoys basking in the sunshine, you’ll need to protect delicate skin from harmful rays. Although it’s not suitable for newborns, sunscreen is suitable for older babies, so make sure you have a ready stock to hand. You’ll also want season-appropriate clothing close by. At a minimum, make sure you’re travelling with a sun hat and baby-sized sunglasses. To protect your baby on particularly bright and hot days, long sleeves are advisable and sun protection blankets a welcome accessory.
