Ok, you may roll your eyes and think I need to get out more, and do you know what? At the moment, I do! But I adore Avengers Movies. Have you ever wondered if there is a correct Marvel Avengers Movie Watch Order for Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies? 

It’s not something I had given thought to before. We watched Iron Man in order and Ant-Man, and have watched the recent movies as they are released. However, there is a correct order the watch the Marvel Movies. And they make so much more sense that way. Yes, some fan prefer their Marvel Movies in chronological order, but for me, it’s all about the story of the Avengers and how it unfolds.

How Many Marvel Avengers Movies are There in 2023?

There are 32 in total as of 2023; there are spin-offs. However, these are the ones that tell the story of the Avengers that I have grown to love so much.

There are differing opinions of the order of Ant-Man and The Wasp, but other than that, as far as I can work out, here is the order to watch the Marvel Movies.

A Little About Each Marvel Avengers Movie

Captain America: The First Avenger

“Captain America: The First Avenger” is a 2011 superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Set during World War II, it tells the story of Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, a patriotic but physically frail man who becomes Captain America through an experimental procedure. 

As Captain America, he fights against the Red Skull, the leader of the villainous organisation HYDRA, who plans to use a powerful artefact called the Tesseract to conquer the world. With the help of his allies, including Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos, Captain America thwarts the Red Skull’s plans and becomes a symbol of hope and freedom. 

Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers is a former Air Force pilot who gains superhuman abilities after her DNA fuses with that of the Kree alien race. She possesses incredible strength, speed, flight, and energy projection/manipulation powers. The movie explores her origin story and her involvement in the Kree-Skrull conflict. Captain Marvel plays a crucial role in the MCU, particularly in the battle against Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame”.

Iron Man

Iron Man’s alter ego is Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist who creates a powerful suit of armour with advanced technology to fight crime. Portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU, Iron Man is a founding member of the Avengers and plays a significant role in the MCU’s interconnected films. 

He evolves from a self-centred playboy to a selfless hero, facing personal challenges and battling villains. Iron Man’s iconic red and gold armour, technological prowess, and witty personality have made him a beloved and recognisable character in the Marvel universe.

Iron Man 2

In “Iron Man 2,” Tony Stark faces pressure to share his Iron Man technology while dealing with declining health. He encounters Ivan Vanko, or Whiplash, seeking revenge using his own version of the arc reactor technology. 

Stark also forms a complex relationship with Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. As Stark grapples with his ego and confronts new threats, he must reconcile with his actions and strive to save himself and his loved ones. The film expands the character development of Tony Stark and sets the stage for future instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Incredible Hulk

 A reboot of the Hulk franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It follows the story of Bruce Banner, played by Edward Norton, who transforms into the Hulk, a powerful green creature when angry or stressed. 

As Banner seeks a cure for his condition, he must evade General Thunderbolt Ross, played by William Hurt, who wants to capture him. The film explores themes of identity, control, and the consequences of unchecked power. Despite mixed reviews, the character of the Hulk continues to play a significant and much-loved role in the MCU.

Thor

The first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) centred around the character of Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, the Norse God of Thunder and banished to Earth after igniting a conflict with the Frost Giants.

 Thor learns humility and must stop his treacherous brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, from seizing the throne of Asgard. The film blends fantasy, mythology, and science fiction, exploring themes of redemption and responsibility. “Thor” received positive reviews, spawning sequels and establishing Thor as an iconic superhero within the MCU.

The Avengers

“The Avengers”, directed by Joss Whedon, features an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

The film follows these iconic Marvel superheroes as they unite to combat Loki, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston and his Chitauri alien army in an attempt to conquer Earth. With its immense success, “The Avengers” laid the groundwork for the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe and solidified the Avengers as a beloved superhero team.

Iron Man 3

Tony Stark faces anxiety and insomnia after the events of The Avengers. He must confront a powerful terrorist called the Mandarin, portrayed by Ben Kingsley, who launches devastating attacks.

As Stark grapples with personal and physical challenges, he relies on his ingenuity and suits of armour to protect those he cares about. The film explores themes of identity, redemption, and the consequences of past actions. Iron Man 3 concludes Tony Stark’s character arc in his solo movies and sets the stage for his future adventures in the MCU.

Thor: Dark World

“The Dark World” is a 2013 superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, teams up with his mischievous brother Loki, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, to stop the Dark Elf Malekith, played by Christopher Eccleston, from using the Aether to plunge the universe into darkness. 

The film explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and family relationships while expanding the cosmic aspects of the MCU. Although it received mixed reviews, “Thor: The Dark World” remains an important chapter in Thor’s story within the larger MCU narrative.

Captain America: Winter Soldier

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film features an ensemble cast, including Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, and Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, also known as Falcon. 

Sebastian Stan portrays Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, who is revealed to be Captain America’s old friend. The film explores loyalty, betrayal, and personal freedoms as Captain America uncovers a conspiracy within S.H.I.E.L.D. and faces off against the Winter Soldier. 

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” received critical acclaim for its engaging story, intense action sequences, and impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Guardians of the Galaxy

“Guardians of the Galaxy” directed by James Gunn. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, who teams up with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). 

This unlikely group of heroes must stop Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) from using the powerful Orb to destroy civilisations. The film became a critical and commercial success, launching a popular franchise within the MCU and featuring the characters in subsequent films.

 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The sequel to the 2014 film “Guardians of the Galaxy.”  The Guardians encounter new challenges as they uncover the truth about Peter’s father, Ego the Living Planet, portrayed by Kurt Russell, and face off against the Sovereign led by Ayesha, played by Elizabeth Debicki. 

The film explores family, identity, and finding one’s place in the universe. With its blend of humour, emotional moments, fabulous soundtrack and visually stunning action sequences, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” expands the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and further develops the relationships between the Guardians.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Joss Whedon directed them. The Avengers face a new threat in the form of Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark that turns against its creators. The team confronts personal challenges and internal conflicts as they battle Ultron and his minions.

The film explores themes of power, responsibility, and the consequences of creating artificial intelligence. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” delivers epic action sequences and character development and sets the stage for future events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ant-Man

“Ant-Man”, directed by Peyton Reed, the movie follows Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a former thief who becomes the new Ant-Man under the mentorship of Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). 

Together, they plan a heist to stop Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), Pym’s former protégé, from weaponising Pym’s groundbreaking technology. With the ability to shrink in size but increase in strength, Lang must navigate the challenges of the heist while reconciling with personal issues and reconnecting with his daughter. “

Captain America: Civil War

“Captain America: Civil War” is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo; the movie centres around a conflict between Captain America and Iron Man over the Sokovia Accords, which require superheroes to operate under government oversight. 

The Avengers split into two factions, with Captain America advocating for personal freedom and Iron Man supporting government regulation. The film introduces new characters like Black Panther and Spider-Man and explores themes of accountability and loyalty. “Captain America: Civil War” features intense action sequences and significantly affects the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Spider-Man: Homecoming

The movie ” Spider-Man: Homecoming”, directed by Jon Watts, follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he navigates high school life while secretly being the web-slinging hero, Spider-Man. 

Under Tony Starks guidance, Peter faces the villainous Vulture (Michael Keaton) and learns important lessons about responsibility and heroism. The film combines action, comedy, and coming-of-age elements. Thus showcasing a youthful and relatable Spider-Man and establishing Spider-Man as a beloved part of the MCU.

Doctor Strange

“Doctor Strange”,  directed by Scott Derrickson, follows the journey of Dr Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a skilled but arrogant neurosurgeon who turns to the mystic arts after a life-changing accident. 

Under the tutelage of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Strange learns to harness his powers and protect Earth from supernatural threats. “Doctor Strange” received acclaim for its storytelling and visual effects, expanding the mystical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and setting the stage for future appearances of the character.

Black Panther

“Black Panther” directed by Ryan Coogler. The story follows T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, who becomes the Black Panther and the king of Wakanda after his father’s death. 

T’Challa faces challenges to his rule when an enemy named Erik Killmonger, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, emerges. The film explores identity, heritage, and responsibility while showcasing Wakanda’s advanced technology and rich culture. “Black Panther” received critical acclaim for its representation, cultural significance, and compelling storytelling. 

It became a cultural phenomenon, breaking barriers and inspiring audiences worldwide. The film’s success marked a significant milestone in diverse representation within the superhero genre.

Thor: Ragnarok

“Thor: Ragnarok” directed by Taika Waititi. The movie follows Thor as he finds himself imprisoned on the planet Sakaar and forced to participate in a gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo. 

Together with new allies, including Valkyrie and Loki, Thor must stop the ruthless Hela, portrayed by Cate Blanchett, from conquering Asgard and bringing about Ragnarok, the prophesized destruction of their world. 

Avengers: Infinity War

“Avengers: Infinity War” directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The movie follows the Avengers and their allies facing the formidable villain Thanos, who aims to gather the powerful Infinity Stones and destroy half the universe. 

The film features an ensemble cast of Marvel superheroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and others, joining forces to stop Thanos. “Avengers: Infinity War” is known for its high-stakes action, emotional storytelling, and shocking ending. It is a culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s narrative, setting the stage for the subsequent film, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Ant-Man and The Wasp

“Ant-Man and The Wasp”, directed by Peyton Reed. The movie continues the story of Scott Lang,  who teams up with Hope van Dyne, portrayed by Evangeline Lilly, as they take on the roles of Ant-Man and the Wasp. The plot revolves around their mission to rescue Hope’s mother, Janet van Dyne, from the quantum realm while dealing with a new enemy, Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen.

Avengers: Endgame

“Avengers: Endgame” directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. It serves as the culmination of the Infinity Saga storyline. It follows the remaining Avengers as they unite to reverse the devastating actions of Thanos, who wiped out half of all life in the universe. 

Through a time-travel mission, the Avengers retrieve the Infinity Stones from the past to restore the fallen and save the universe.  It broke numerous box office records, becoming one of the highest-grossing films ever and a monumental event in cinematic history.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” directed by Jon Watts. The movie follows Peter Parker on a school trip to Europe, hoping for a break from his superhero duties. However, he is recruited by Nick Fury to team up with Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, to fight against the Elementals, dangerous elemental creatures threatening the world where Peter must navigate the challenges of being a teenage superhero.

Black Widow

“Black Widow” directed by Cate Shortland. It serves as a standalone prequel and explores the backstory of Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johansson, also known as Black Widow and delves into Natasha’s past as a spy and assassin. 

As she confronts her history and faces a dangerous conspiracy involving the Red Room, Natasha reunites with her estranged “family” and must unravel the secrets of her past. 

“Black Widow” combines action, espionage, and family dynamics, providing an intimate look into Natasha’s character and her journey for redemption. The film introduces new characters and expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The movie introduces Shang-Chi, portrayed by Simu Liu, a skilled martial artist who must confront his past and embrace his destiny as a legendary warrior. 

When Shang-Chi’s father, Wenwu, also known as the Mandarin, threatens to unleash chaos, Shang-Chi, along with his friend Katy, played by Awkwafina, embarks on a journey to uncover the truth about his family and the Ten Rings organisation. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” received widespread acclaim for representing Asian culture and characters as a groundbreaking addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It expands the superhero roster and connects to the larger Marvel storylines.

Eternals

“Eternals”, directed by Chloé Zhao, introduces a team of immortal beings known as the Eternals, who have lived on Earth for thousands of years. When their ancient enemies, the Deviants, threaten humanity, the Eternals must come out of hiding and unite to protect the world. Led by a star-studded cast, including Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani, the film explores the diverse backgrounds and powers of the Eternals as they navigate their purpose on Earth. “

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home” directed by Jon Watts, follows Peter as he seeks the help of Doctor Strange to erase his secret identity. However, their spell goes wrong, opening the multiverse and bringing in villains from other dimensions who know Peter’s true identity. 

The film received positive reviews for its performances, action sequences, and visual effects. It became the highest-grossing film of 2021 and the sixth-highest-grossing film ever. 

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, directed by Sam Raimi, follows Dr Strange and his allies as they traverse the multiverse to confront a new adversary. Alongside Cumberbatch, the cast includes Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. 

Thor: Love and Thunder

Love and Thunder” follow Thor on a quest for inner peace, but his retirement is interrupted by the arrival of Gorr, the God Butcher (Christian Bale), a powerful killer who seeks to eliminate all gods. Thor teams up with King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who mysteriously gains the power of Thor. Together, they embark on a cosmic adventure to stop Gorr and uncover the truth behind his vengeance. 

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3  

The Guardians of the Galaxy find themselves settling into their new lives on Knowhere. However, their peaceful existence is abruptly disrupted when Adam Warlock, a powerful being created by the High Evolutionary, arrives. Warlock is being pursued by the High Evolutionary, who intends to exploit him for his experiments. To save the galaxy, the Guardians must join forces with Adam Warlock and thwart the plans of the High Evolutionary.

Ant-Man and he Wasp: Quantumania

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaare retired but face a new threat when Kang the Conqueror arrives from the future with plans to conquer the present. They must join forces with their allies to stop Kang and save the world. 

The film explores the consequences of their actions in the Quantum Realm and features time-travelling elements. Anticipated highlights include the return of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, the introduction of Kang the Conqueror, and further exploration of the Quantum Realm.
