The Best Things To Do In Swansea Bay With Teenagers

There is a lot to be said for holidaying in the UK. Ok it’s lovely to hop on a plane to sunnier parts. But there is also so much to explore on our own doorstep without the grief of airports and flight delays. Wales is somewhere we have never explored. So a family holiday in Wales was something we were keen to try. I have been building a little list of things to do in Swansea Bay with teenagers.

If you want to see me create my projects, follow me on Tik Tok and Instagram.

When we got the chance to visit Swansea Bay and the Mumbles as guests of Visit Swansea Bay, I was so excited to see what South Wales had to offer families travelling with teenagers.

You see the balance has to be right for us including beautiful beaches, exciting activities and good food. We were on the hunt for great family activities in Swansea and the surrounding areas. And we found loads of family friendly places to visit in Swansea Bay. Making a family holiday in Wales a real contender for an action packed UK family break.

Here are my tips of things to do in Swansea Bay and the surrounding areas with kids?

Things to do in Swansea when its raining

Learn to surf and ride the slides at the LC Leisure Complex

The LC leisure complex is the perfect place to visit in Swansea on a rainy day. This epic indoor water park has enough to keep you busy for a whole day. With climbing walls offering different levels of challenge, great for all abilities. I managed the first 3, whilst Joe romped through all the levels.

The pool has several water slides, waves and a lazy river. Our favourite being the Master Blaster, we spent ages riding the slides and bobbing around on the lazy river before we all took part in a surfing lesson on the Boardrider.

This was the first time I had ever had a surf lesson and found it quite hard; Joe however took to it straight away. He and Chris have surfed on simulators before and felt instantly confident. I however took a little longer to build my confidence but our instructor Adam was fantastic offering tips and encouragement.

What are the prices for activities at the LC Leisure Complex at peak times?

The water park, £7 per adult and £5.50 for children

Boardrider, £5 per person for a 20-minute session (£4.50 if you upgrade your Waterpark visit to include the Waterpark)

Climbing Wall, £5.50 for a 20 minute session

Where to eat in Swansea?

Check out the Grape and Olive restaurant. Located at the top of Wales’ tallest building the views in this contemporary stylish restaurant and the food and gin cocktails are great.

Try Out Surfing Lessons In Wales With Gower Activity Centres

I found surfing in the sea so much easier, but it’s a great idea to have a go on a simulator first. However there is no other feeling like surfing on real waves. We all adored our half day surfing lesson with Gower Activity Centres. I can’t put into words what a wonderful day this was. We all left having been bitten by the surfing bug. If you are visiting Wales as a family then you have to try out a family surfing lesson. And the guys at Gower Activity Centres are truly amazing.

And when you are done surfing!

Explore Rhossili Bay And Visit The Worms Head

The Worms head is a tidal Island off the coast of Rhossili Bay, the bay is a national trust site and hosts spectacular views from the cliff tops. And as well as being amazing beaches for surfing, they are also a great place to set up for a day at the beach. Parking (which is very reasonable) is available up on the hill-top, with a steep but scenic footpath down to the beach. I did notice people with prams to it must be accessible.

Try out the Worms Head Hotel for lunch, the atmosphere is lovely and the dining room has stunning views over the bay. Oh and the fish and chips are delicious and you can have them with or without batter.

Visit The Down To Earth Project

The Down to Earth Project is all about reconnecting as a family, taking a bit of time out and working as a team whilst learning a new skill. We loved the time we spent here. It’s the perfect place to get back to nature and enjoy family time, and even try a bit of stick carving. The Down To Earth Project offer a host of tailor-made activities for families. Check them out here.

Explore The Mumbles

The Mumbles is bursting at the scenes with many picture postcard spots to wander, and rows of pretty pastel coloured houses. A beach dotted with boats and rocks perfect for climbing on. And the pier, which has to be one of the prettiest I have ever seen. With hanging baskets packed with colourful flowers, and knitted covers on the bollards (you have to see these to believe it, they are adorable)

And with Oystermouth Castle sitting majestically on a hill overlooking this pretty coastal town. Which is a wonderful place to explore, and don’t forget to check out the glass platform and spectacular views over the Mumbles.

We only spent half a day in the Mumbles but it is somewhere we will certainly revisit. There is so much to see and so much to take in.

And if you are hungry check out Verdi’s with views over the bay and serving delicious Italian fair and the best ie cream ever. Including Turkish delight flavour, omg it is amazing.

Check out the beach at Oxwich Bay

The beach is stunning and if you get there at around 4pm the tide is still out but on it’s way back in. The perfect time for a beach walk before heading to the Oxwich Bay Hotel for dinner, if you pick a warm day you can dine outside in the garden overlooking the beach.

And if you are out and about in the car, check out the King Arthur Hotel. A wonderful hotel/pub/restaurant, The food is hearty, plentiful, delicious and reasonably priced. I had the Caesar salad and wow it was so good.

So there you have it, the best things to do in Swansea Bay and the Mumbles. We adored out trip and had so many exciting new adventures, it just goes to show staying in the UK can be just as much fun.

  1. We love Wales, and went to North Wales in the summer holidays. We’ve not been to Swansea though, so I’ll be bookmarking this for future reference! x

  2. This looks great Sarah. We have family who live only about an hour from Swanswea and got there regularly but I’ve never actually been to Swansea itself! Looks like there’s loads to do – indoors and out (it’s often wet in Wales lol!). xx

  3. Going to Swansea used to be such a treat when I was growing up. It was our nearest city (although it was still over an hour away) so we only went a few time a year but I LOVED it. I haven’t been back for years now though, maybe next summer – and I’ll definitely keep the list in mind when we do.

  4. Gosh there’s so much to do! It’s good that there’s a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. We’ve only been to Wales once (accidentally! Don’t ask!) and it was only for half an hour as I put the wrong postcode in the satnav so we’ve not explored it properly yet. The Mumbles looks pretty (and I love the name!) and so does Rhossili Bay. Well done you for giving surfing a go – loving how you’re challenging yourself with so many things at the moment.
