Toby Proofing My Home With Valspar

When I started taking all the photos for this post I had an intruder. I am talking stalker level, very time I set up a shot along plodded Toby and put himself down in the middle. I sent him away a few times, but he just kept on coming back. It was almost like he was auditioning for a part as the Valspar Dog! I decided that actually that messy little swine is part of the reason I am writing this very post, him and is less hairy human brothers, so I let him stay.

When we decided to get another dog the brief was, non-molting, short-haired, handbag or lap sized non-messy dog. We ended up with the complete opposite a big, over hairy, over molting, messy smelly bear type creature, that is a mud magnet, loves rain, and also loves shaking his fur (You know they way dogs do!) All over my paintwork as soon as he returns from his walk, but is also oh so adorable.

If you want to see me create my projects, follow me on Tik Tok and Instagram.

And then there is the boys, I don’t know if they have balance issues, but they walk around the home with their hands on the walls, I spend my life trying to remove the dirty muddy handprints they leave as a souvenir to remind me of their very existence. But honestly the noise level is enough to remind me. You would think the handprints on walls would get better as they get older, but no, the hands just get bigger.

Now I know I should give in, not have white walls, but I love our home looking crisp and white. And I was here first, with my neat tidy little house, do you remember those days? And then I was blessed with that messy lot, and yes I will still have white.

In a last-ditch attempt of living the white dream I have tried Valspar.  Valspar® Premium Walls & Ceilings withstands the wear and tear of everyday life with its super-scrub formulation for maximum durability. Premium Walls & Ceilings has also recently been awarded the seal of approval by mums, having been awarded the Mumsnet Rated badge with 94% of testers saying they would recommend the product.

Surely Mums know right? They will feel my pain, lucky to live in chaos but some days the fallout, mess and mud splatted walls drive you mad.

I decided to stay with white but add a feature wall, and chose the most offending wall in the hope that when Toby shakes his fur he does it nearer to that wall. I see you rolling your eyes and saying why don’t you take him straight to his bed, or leave him outside? But this dog saves shaking his fur for the hallway; I once wrapped him in a towel and dried him, he still run to the hallway for his habitual fur shake as soon as he was free.

For my feature wall I decided on Gotham City Grey and headed off to the Valspar colour-mixing centre at my local B&Q store. Valspar has a spectrum of 2,000 preselected shades to choose from, which made it a tough decision, but great to be able to fine-tune my choice to match the decor and existing furniture perfectly.

I am thrilled with the new look, the deeper colour gives the room a new dimension whist I still have the light and brightness reflected by the beautiful bright white paint. And a couple of weeks down the line it is still looking great, funny enough Toby has been the least of my worries, with Joe spilling black-currant down the wall (Thank goodness for wooden floors) and Jack and his muddy hands leaning on the walls as be kicks off his football boots.

But so far so good, the mud and blackcurrant wiped right off. And as for Toby? I m no longer on pins when we arrive home from our walks as I know Valspar paint is easily wiped down. I may just have Toby proofed our hallway, so bring on winter! Just not yet, I am ready for a little sun first.

Valspar paint is available from B&Q stores nationwide, and if you really want to test it out? My messy little angel can be made available for long walks in muddy fields!

Check out my little vlog that shows just how scrubbable Valspar is!

  1. I love that Toby gets in on the action, he is just so adorable bless him. I really want the Gotham City grey just for the name. And you really need wipe clean paint when you have kids around, especially muddy boys. Your walls are looking oh so shiny and new x

    • I know I am biased but he is so adorable, but honestly Tracey he is such a messy dog, he loves mud grr. But if I could back I would still always choose him, it was love at first sight. And yes we so do need wipe clean paint in this house and it is holding up well so far x

  2. Oh wow, this sounds like it was made for me! Some of our walls are just ridiculous since having the twins, I can’t believe how much food and drink they spill but I don’t want to repaint just yet as I know they’ll still get messy. I’m just trying to hold off another six months in the hopes they’ll be a little less messy. I love the colours you’ve chosen, that grey is fantastic xx

    • Thank you Hayley I am so pleased with them, last time we decorated I went for a cheaper paint and it was rubbish when you wiped it the paint came of, such a false economy when you think of the time it takes to redecorate, and Hayley trust me it never gets better, Jack is 15 and still walks with hands along the wall grrr !

  3. Very nice!! I’m swayed by the fact it’s called Gotham. How cool??! I know what you mean about handprints. But Paul’s the worst, though. It’s like he walks round with permanent newspaper print on his hands and cleans them by wiping them on the wall. ARGH!!
