After spending a glorious week at St James Club Morgan Bay, all-inclusive family resort in St Lucia in July, I wanted to share a bit of a low down on the resort. Of all the questions I had before we visited. You see booking a family holiday to the Caribbean is a big deal. The cost of the flights, time flying (8.5 hours) has to be worth it.
We chose to go to the Caribbean for a week. Something I have never done before always opting for longer stays. However if you are traveling with older kids and teenagers it really works. Yes we could have stayed longer, but it did not detract from our enjoyment. And as older kids are chilled out on long haul flights it was an easy and enjoyable experience.
But enough about the journey here is a little more about what to expect at St James Club, Morgan Bay St Lucia.
Dining At St James Club, Morgan Bay
The all-inclusive package includes all meals drinks and snacks. The cocktail list is long, there is a choice of beers and spirits and the wine is of a good standard. There is also a coffee bar to get hot drinks and cakes throughout the day. And a soft drink self-service machine near the main pool areas for top ups of water, fizzy drinks, tea and coffee.
For Breakfast at St James Club
Breakfast is served at Bambou and the Palms or if you fancy a pastry and a cappuccino check out the choc bay cafe. Our favourite was Bamboo, and if you get there early the best tables overlook the beach it really is the perfect spot for a Caribbean breakfast and try out the smoothie bar, they are delicious.
There are many delicious lunch options
My favourite place for lunch was the plum-tree bar and grill. The food is a little different there but there is also a choice of favourites such as burgers. However the burritos are the best. The service is great and the chilled out atmosphere around the pool was incredible. This was by far my favourite place to chill on the resort.
If you are a beach kinda person then don’t miss the lunchtime BBQ on the beach, serving dishes such as jerk chicken kebab, burgers, salads and corn on the cob. The food was delicious; this was Chris’s fave lunch spot, which meant we had to take turns. And you could take you lunch back to your sun lounger round the pool or on the beach or find a poolside table.
And if you fancy a buffet lunch either the Palms or Bambou is open lunchtime offering a different theme every day.
For Dinner at St James Club
If you don’t want to plan ahead, the Palms restaurant is great for a buffet dinner no reservation needed and every night is a different theme.
Bambou offers a Caribbean fusion menu and with beachfront location it’s a wonderful place to enjoy dinner with the sound of the waves.
Tree Tops Pizza restaurant serving delicious freshly made pizza and pasta dishes set up on the hillside overlooking the resort. Once the sun has set treetops has a cozy alfresco feel as you dine with the sound of crickets in the background.
And my absolute favourite was Morgan’s Pier fish restaurant. Set on a pier out in the sea, you can see the resort lights twinkling in the night as you tuck into amazing fish and steak dishes. And for a supplement you can go for the seafood platter which was worth every penny and absolutely amazing.
St James Club also has its very own Al la Carte restaurant, Le Jardin. There is an extra charge for Le Jardin restaurant, which has a dress code; men and boys must wear trousers. We were unable to eat there, as we did not take trousers for the boys. However the reviews from people staying at resort were great.
Does the all-inclusive package include water sports too?
Yes water sports are included in the price, and this includes water ski lessons, canoes, pedaloes. paddle boarding, the banana boat and sailing lessons. There really is enough to keep you busy all day long. And there are also catamaran tours and jet skis for an additional cost.
Is there free Wi-Fi at St James Club?
There is free Wi-Fi in the reception area, which sometimes stretches to the pool area but not always. However if you stay in a Deluxe Ocean View room, One Bedroom Garden View Suite and One Bedroom Ocean View Suite (blocks 900-1200) The cost is US$10/day or $50/week + 15% VAT, paid locally to the resort. We did have in room Wi-Fi and the service was excellent. We were all able to access the Internet at the same time in our room no problem, access social media and upload photos to my blog. I think when you are paying for Wi-Fi it is important to know it works sufficiently and we had no problems at all.
Getting around the resort
The resort is very hilly, which is great for walking off all that delicious holiday food. However you can also call a buggy to take you around site at any time of day and into the night. This is a huge bonus if you catch a Caribbean storm or just fancy nipping back to your room or to another pool. You can walk as much or as little as you want to on resort. There is also room on the back of the buggies for prams and wheelchairs.
Are there exercise classes available?
There is a full programme of classes and a gym. Classes although on throughout the day also have a good early morning selection including fit float, Pilates and stretch. And if spinning is your thing there are afternoon sessions in the air-conditioned gym. And tennis courts for those who like an early morning or late afternoon game. I took classes 3 out of 7 mornings and found them a great way to start the day. The most challenging being fit float, but hey, it’s so much fun and yes I did fall in.
How many pools are there at St James Club?
There are 4 pools on site, giving you lots of choice including 2 adult only pools. All pools supply fresh towels and we never struggled getting a sunbed (My pet hate)
The main pool complex has 2 pools an adult only with a swim up bar and a family pool. This is directly overlooking the beach so you can nip between the pool and sea should you wish too.
The other adult pool is up near the spa area on a hill overlooking the sea. It’s a beautiful secluded area perfect for getting an hours chill time with a book and a cocktail.
And for families with smaller children there is a pool up near the sports complex. This is a little more secluded and chilled out, with great views over the rainforest. The pool is not deep; there are always sunbeds and tables for lunch. I loved this little area.
The boys preferred to be round the main pool, however for me, the sports pool area felt tranquil and calmer no matter the time of day.
Are there family rooms at St James Club?
We stayed in a family suite, which had 2 bedrooms, bathrooms, balconies and 1 adjoining lounge. There was lots of storage space, a fridge, iron and ironing board and tea and coffee facilities. There is a hairdryer in each bathroom but if you have thick hair like me I would take your own more powerful dryer. The rooms are stylish and comfortable and omg the bed was sooooo comfortable. Check out my room vlog below for a peek of the rooms layouts.
Are there kids activities arranged?
There is a kids club up to the age of 11. If your children are over that age there is loads to do as a family. The boys had the best time and Joe made lots of friends. The fact that we got to spend time together taking part in all the activities was wonderful. However I do think it would have been a great idea to have a few pre teen activities arranged.
Can you get out and explore St Lucia?
We took part in the Pink Panther tour and had a wonderful day exploring St Lucia. You cannot visit this stunning island without visiting the Pitons, bathing in the mud baths and showering in a waterfall. The tour is run by the resort and can be booked on site along with a host of other tours and activities.
What sorts of evening activities are there at St James Club?
Evenings are quite chilled affairs, but there is always something going on around the main pool area. Every night is different with local bands and themed evenings. Also 1 night a week there is a beach BBQ party. This is the event of the week and is a huge celebration with stilt walkers, a steel band fire dancers and the most amazing food.
I think I have covered all the questions I had before our visit.
St James Club is a wonderful resort for families wanting to spend quality time together. The food is fantastic and the location is perfect.
