Are you are planning a family holiday to France and wondering whether you should visit Puy Du Fou?
The answer is resounding yes. Yet it is a very difficult place to quantify and needs to be seen to be believed.
I have just returned from a whirlwind press trip to Puy Du Fou in France with a gorgeous group of ladies from BritMums and was lucky enough to be able to see what the park has to offer. Puy Du Fou is the prefect place to visit with kids.
Puy Du Fou is a place that is full of wonder and magic that has the power to make you feel like a child all over again. If you are planning a family holidays to France, this is one French attraction I would add to your itinerary.
Exactly what is Puy Du Fou?
Puy Du Fou is a theme park of epic proportions which is set around 3 historically themed villages with real shops and restaurants. All the shops are run by individual traders making and selling unique products. The park does not focus on pushing branded products which is so refreshing.
The park first opened its doors in 1978 with the very first show of La Cinéscénie and has grown from strength to strength ever since. Welcoming over 2 million guests in 2017 it really is the best-kept secret France has to offer.
Interestingly Puy Du Fou Is A Family theme park that has no rides.
Yet Puy Du Fou offers 7 spectacular day and night shows included in the price of your ticket. And also 11 immersive shows that offer an interactive walk through experience, these are shows in themselves and offer spectacular effects and atmosphere.
Could you get bored with all those shows? Not a chance, every show is unique and different. Each offering magical experiences with historical undertones that make you leave wanting to know more.
The people behind the shows at Puy De Fou are creative geniuses. And just when you think you can be shocked no more you are presented with another show or special effect that has you thinking that magic must be real. That has you running to the next show wondering what on earth is going to happen next.
What are the best shows at Puy Du Fou?
This is such a subjective question, however my favourites were:
Le Mystère De La Pérouse.
This takes you onboard the La Boussole, which set sail from Brest in 1785. This immersive experience allows you to follow the ships expedition and all the crew encounters. Le Mysrére De La Pérouse’s attention to detail blew my mind. I have no photos or footage to share as it has to be seen to be believed.
The special effects were so incredible, I found myself holding onto the walls of the ship to stabilise myself several times, its crazy, exciting and wonderful with the most awesome finale. I came out wanting to do it all again.
Mousquetaire De Richelieu.
Based on the 3 musketeers this indoor show offers the most incredible stunts and effects. It is showcased in an indoor theatre of epic portions that starts out quite tame. But in true Puy Du Fou style has you wondering how on earth they managed to create the incredible spectacular finale.
Les Orgues De Feu.
Is a nighttime show set to the most spectacular fountain backdrop. Although Puy Du Fou offer more than just a fountain show, and I left feeling I had been to a ballet. This is a late night one, but it’s worth staying up for. Les Orgues De Feu was the most spectacular fountain show I have ever seen. But expect a few crazy but wonderful surprises.
La Cinéscénie is only shown at Puy Du Fou on Friday and Saturday nights. It has an addition fee to the park entry fee of €27 which you must book in advance. However if you are planning to visit, plan your trip around this it is a must see show. Lasting and hour and a half this is an off the scale show of proportions I have never before experienced. With a cast of 2500 it is played out in an arena a short walk from the park entrance and on site hotels.
What language are the shows at Puy Du Fou in?
All the shows are in French but you can get a translator set or connect to the on site app for translation. (Tip, take your own headphones as I found the ones that came with the device uncomfortable.)
On occasions I never wore mine as was able to follow the drama and magic of the show just the same. It honestly did not detract one little bit. If anything made it all feel a bit more romantic. These shows are about the special effects and magic.
There is also a daily visitors guide and an on site app available in English (other languages are available) which provides you with up to date information on all shows are restaurant opening times including a helpful price guide.
Where to eat at Puy Du Fou?
The food is exceptional and very reasonable priced in the park offering the option to take a picnic, use the fast food kiosks or eat in the unique dining experiences. I will be sharing more about the food later.

Whats new at Puy Du Fou for 2019?
An exciting Grand-scale new attraction for 2019 – ‘Le Premier Royaume’
2019 sees the opening of an extraordinary new production, ‘Le Premier Royaume’, which will be located in the heart of the Grand Park. Inspired by a pivotal period in the history of France, this immersive attraction features magnificent sets and unprecedented special effects, uniquely conceived and produced by the Puy du Fou team.
Step into the 5th century and follow the destiny of Clovis, the famous king of the Franks, against a backdrop of Attila’s rampaging followers and a declining Roman Empire. Relive the military conquests undertaken by Clovis who increasingly found himself torn between the ancestral traditions of his people and his quest to found the first kingdom.
In ‘Le Premier Royaume’, Puy du Fou leads its visitors on a 20-minute walk-through experience, following Clovis through 14 different fantasy worlds. Visitors pass through rooms surrounded by Attila’s Huns, through the bustling royal armoury and the Mérovingian palace until they reach the mythical legend-rich world of Valhalla where some of the uncertainties of this troubled period start to unravel.
