With the impending release of the new Star Wars film we decided to give Joe’s bedroom a mini makeover. I think I knew the moment I first held Jack in my arms I was going to be a minority in my own home, then came Joe, then Toby yes, even the dog is a boy.
Star Wars in our home has been very much like a religion, when people put Jedi Knight as their religion it makes me giggle, as I totally get it. As soon as the boys were old enough they had all the Star Wars costumes, and the box set of the films and love nothing more than having lads nights in with Pizza and a Star Wars movie, at Walt Disney World we rode the Star Wars ride 3 times, and queued for an hour to make a custom-made light saber!
I lose count of how may light sabers they have had over the years, and how much we have spent on Star Wars Lego (In fact that makes me weep), we even have a Darth Vader Mr. Potato Head somewhere.
When Jack was 5 he invited Darth Vader to his birthday party, we were fortunate he was not out fighting the rebel forces and was available to nip into the party for an hour. As you can imagine? Being so well-connected made Jack very popular. To be honest I don’t think at that moment in time even the great Beckham himself would have been so well received.
But something weird has happened; over the years the constant reinforcement of Star Wars has had an effect on me. As now when they put a movie on, I watch it rather that skulk off, or read a book. And like that mad lot, I am so looking forward to seeing the new movie.
When Joe came home to see his newly revamped room he was thrilled. In fact he spent all evening in his room, and being very much a people person he usually like to be around people, so this was a huge surprise.
I particularly like the Darth Vader night-light as it is so subtle and creates the perfect environment to wind down at bedtime. Joe loves the bin. Ha ha yes you heard me right, he is excited about having a bin in his room. I just hope he uses it, because honestly the state of his rooms some days makes me so cross. In fact I have told him if he does not keep it tidy now, the Star Wars gear will go. So far he is keeping to his side of the bargain, fingers crossed.
